DFT candidate doesn't 'froth'

As a critic of both the contenders for office in the Detroit Federation of Teachers, I found Nolan Finley's portrayal of Steve Conn grotesquely unfair ("DPS spared from frothing union boss," Jan. 27). Conn may be strident, even wrong, but he does not "froth." He won the support of half the DFT rank and file.

Detroit, tragically, is the embodiment of the old saw: community or barbarism. Only a social movement that addresses the relationship of education to transcending poverty and racism can offer the hope that could create true community.
