ExPriest Meets His Maker, In Jail

Ex-Priest Dies After an Attack in Prison

By THE NEW YORK TIMES

BOSTON, Aug. 23 John J. Geoghan, the defrocked priest at the center of the clergy sexual abuse scandal here, died this afternoon after being attacked at a Massachusetts state prison, a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections said.

Mr. Geoghan, 68, was involved in a dispute with the inmate at the prison in Shirley, Mass., shortly after noon, the spokesman said. He was taken to Leominster Hospital, where he died.

Mr. Geoghan was serving a 9-to-10 year sentence for indecent assault and battery. He was found guilty last January of sliding his hands down a boy's bathing suit in 1991 at a suburban pool. Mr. Geoghan, who has been accused of molesting nearly 150 children while a priest in the Archdiocese of Boston, had two counts of child rape still pending against him. The archdiocese reached a $10 million settlement last September with 86 people who say they were molested by Mr. Geoghan.
