Brer Rabbit
|
A great deal of thought and discussion went into the
choice of Brer Rabbit for our symbol. As we have said, we think the rabbit
represents the joyousness in struggle, and the potential for the victory
of the less apparently powerful over the dominant, that Joel Chandler Harris
repeated from stories told to him. The rabbit makes mistakes, too, and
keeps going--a quality we admire. The stories were made better, for us,
by Julius
Lester. If you click on Lester's name, you can go to the Amazon description
of his books, and the awards they have received, including the Coretta Scott
King Award. However, some of our colleagues think the stories are
inherently racist. While we disagree, if you would like to enter the discussion,
please email Rich Gibson at rgibson@pipeline.com. |
